I-580 EB Truck Climbing Lane Project
The Altamont Pass on Eastbound I-580 east of Livermore is well known to commuters as an area of significant traffic congestion. Along with serving commuters and recreational traffic, I-580 is the major route for the commercial movement of goods from the Port of Oakland to the Central Valley and points eastward. Throughput of goods from Port of Oakland, and thus on I-580, is expected to increase significantly in the future. The relatively steep grade of I-580 in the eastbound direction adds to traffic congestion as slow moving trucks occupy the two right hand lanes, creating bottlenecks for other vehicles. The Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (ACCMA) in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is proposing to construct a truck climbing lane in the eastbound direction from Greenville Road to the summit at North Flynn Road to alleviate congestion and enhance safety. The Project Study Report was completed in 2008; the project is now in the design stages. The project is fully funded.
